Bruno Mars, ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ album review

The cover photo of a gorilla locked in a tender embrace with a jukebox, looking as if he wants nothing more than to buy it a glass of pinot and take it to an early showing of “Les Miz,” should be a dead giveaway: “Unorthodox Jukebox,” his impeccably made and compulsively listenable sophomore release, is not your mother’s Bruno Mars album.

Quick Spins: John Mayer’s ‘Born and Raised’

It was a little over two years ago that John Mayer soaked his career in kerosene and lit a match, sitting for a Playboy interview in which he compared a certain part of his anatomy to David Duke, and gratuitously overshared about his relationships with ex-girlfriends Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson. It was one of pop history’s most spectacular (and purposeful? Freud would say yes) acts of self-sabotage.

Review: Carrie Underwood’s dark side gives way to the sunshine on ‘Blown Away’

Carrie Underwood: "Blown Away"

Carrie Underwood promised that her fourth album, “Blown Away,” would be “darker” than the country-pop sun rays she’s been known to radiate. False alarm. This is merely a trans-faux-mation — that thing pop stars do when they dabble in minor-key melodies, frowny lyrics and/or smoky eye shadow, hoping their listeners will mistake a superficial shift in tone for a meaningful artistic left turn.
