Twitter more popular than Facebook in 2011

Twitter

Although Facebook dominates Twitter in many areas, it lost to its smaller competitor in at least one metric for 2011. Twitter was discussed in about 50 percent of media coverage regarding social networks this year, while Facebook was only talked about 45 percent of the time, according to HighBeam Research. The report did not even bother mentioning Google+.

Senh: Unless those media mentions can convert more people to using twitter, it's kind of a useless metric. It just means that Twitter's marketing department is doing a good job. Also, because writers tend to solicit users to follow them on Twitter, it makes it a more natural medium for them to use.

Google+ Overhauls Photos, Stream Control and Notifications

Google has added several new Google+ features and improved old ones, among them some of the most popular requests from users.

Twitter launches branded pages

Micro-blogging site Twitter is joining the ranks of Facebook and Google+ as it launches 'brand' pages as part of a service-wide redesign.

Google Plus is Doomed

The real test of Google’s social network is what people do after they join. As far as anyone can tell, they aren’t doing a whole lot. Traffic-analysis firms have consistently reported Google+’s traffic to be declining from its early peak. Even Google’s own executives seem to have gotten bored by the site.

Senh: I agree with most of what the article says about Google+ because, unlike Forbes, I actually tried it out. And early on, I found that I have no use for it. It became a ghost town within a month. The only stuff there now are people's twitter feeds. The only thing that I'm using it for now is to +1 Wopular's articles for SEO. I'll probably also create a Wopular page, but I'm not sure how effective it'll be when no one's actually using it.

Larry Page: Google+ has 40 million users

After nearly four months, Google+ now has 40 million users, says Google CEO Larry Page.

Senh: Let's see if they can keep this going. Most of my friends have already abandoned it. The only ones who are still using it are just pimping their products. Google+ is a nice product - clean, sleak, and intuitive. The only problem is most of my friends are on Facebook, and they don't want to leave for a similar service. Google+ still needs a more compelling reason - kinda like when Facebook first opened up their API to developers.

Google+ opens up, traffic rockets 1200+ percent

Google+ opens up, traffic rockets 1200+ percent

Reports of Google+'s demise may have been greatly exaggerated, as the upstart social network exploded in traffic last week after the service opened up to the masses.

Senh: Let's see if people stick around. My hunch is that they won't. If you can't get early adopters to stick around, how can you get the general masses to do it?

Google+ opens service to everyone

Google+ opens service to everyone

Google+ is being opened up for anyone to join after two-and-a-half months is closed testing.

Senh: Dead on arrival. My account is already as dead as Buzz. It is a nice product. It's just that anyone who's not a tech geek would rather just stick with Facebook. And all those people who tried it are going back to Facebook because that's where all the action is.

Google Drops Products, Narrows Focus

Google said it will discontinue several products, as the Internet giant narrows its focus and doubles down on new efforts, including its Google+ social networking service, under CEO Larry Page.

Google+ traffic falls

Google+ traffic falls

After a running start, Google+'s growth may be slowing down a bit. A report from Experian Hitwise found both traffic and users' average time on the social network fell last week in the U.S.

Google Plus purging some accounts

Google Plus purging some accounts

Several Google+ users have had their Google accounts — including Gmail, Docs and other services — frozen or purged, with a message telling them that they have violated the company’s Terms of Service. What do these users have in common? Many of them are not using their real, legal names on their profiles, ZDNet reported.
