A gunman opened fire at an office complex here on Wednesday, wounding at least five people, one of them seriously, before fleeing, the police said. Several hours after the shooting, members of a police S.W.A.T. unit continued to check the building, but the whereabouts of the gunman were not known.

Benjamin Robinson, 28, entered the building at 5151 W. 73rd St. shortly before 8 a.m. and jumped into a truck and started firing, police said. About an hour later, with SWAT teams stationed outside, Robinson shot and killed himself, police and witnesses said.

A cache of Los Angeles Police Department submachine guns and handguns was stolen last week from a secured building used by the department's SWAT unit, raising fears that the weapons, which police had altered to fire only blanks, could be converted back to lethal use, police officials confirmed.
