Man heads to prison for unprovoked attack

HAVERHILL — A Massachusetts man who left another man with broken bones in an unprovoked attack is heading to state prison.The Eagle-Tribune reports that a judge sentenced 48-year-old Shane Mambro to a minimum of two years in prison after the Haverhill man pleaded guilty to assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.Police say Mambro had been arguing with his girlfriend outside of a bar in October 2016 when he crossed the street and beat a man walking alone for no reason.

Jury awards asphalt worker $8.25 million in lawsuit

WORCESTER — A jury has awarded a Massachusetts man and his family $8.25 million in a lawsuit filed after a piece of machinery used to seal cracks in asphalt fell and caused him permanent injuries.The Telegram & Gazette reports that a federal jury ruled in favor of Brian Goodrich and his family Wednesday, finding the companies that designed the equipment more than 50 percent at fault.

 

Man convicted in fatal stabbing outside Springfield shelter

SPRINGFIELD — The suspect in a fatal stabbing outside a Massachusetts homeless shelter has been convicted of first-degree murder.The Republican newspaper reports that Jose Ramos was convicted Thursday of killing Luis Sanchez in March 15 outside the Friends of the Homeless facility in Springfield. Both men had been staying in the shelter.The jury deliberated about two hours before reaching its verdict. The 35-year-old Ramos received a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

Suspect in shooting of police officer faces arraignment

BARNSTABLE — A man described by authorities as a career criminal is heading to court to face a murder charge in the shooting death of a Massachusetts police officer.Prosecutors say 29-year-old Thomas Latanowich is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Barnstable District Court in the death of Yarmouth dog officer Sean Gannon.Police say the 32-year-old Gannon was shot in Barnstable on Thursday while he and other officers were serving an arrest warrant at a home.Gannon's dog, Nero, was injured. Its condition was not immediately known.

Meehan defends deal to buy Mount Ida

UMass President Marty Meehan is defending his controversial decision for UMass Amherst to take over Mount Ida College in Newton amid mounting inquiries from state agencies and pushback from parents, students and teachers.In the deal announced last week, Mount Ida’s 74-acre campus will become part of UMass, which in exchange will take on the school’s estimated $55 million to $70 million debt. Students face the prospect of moving more than 50 miles away to UMass Dartmouth.

 

Cops had to search for beaten kids’ mom

FITCHBURG — The mother accused of assaulting her two young children was nowhere to be found when police found her beaten 6-year-old daughter unresponsive at home with her injured 9-year-old brother.Cops searched for about 2 1⁄2 hours for 37-year-old Shana Pedroso, pinging her cellphone five times to track her, according to a Fitchburg police call log from Tuesday.The police alert for Pedroso warned she “may be armed and dangerous,” the log said.

 

UMass president responds to critics of Mount Ida deal

BOSTON — University of Massachusetts President Martin Meehan is responding to critics of the planned purchase by UMass-Amherst of the assets of Mount Ida College, which plans to close at the end of the current semester.Meehan said Thursday that UMass had no role in Mount Ida's closing and that Mount Ida did not choose the UMass agreement over a proposed merger with Lasell College.Meehan said Mount Ida approached UMass after their merger discussions with Lasell ended and their only alternative was to shut down.
