SW Va. man accused of pistol-whipping woman, stealing purse

GATE CITY — A Scott County man has been arrested after allegedly pistol-whipping a 65-year-old woman and snatching her purse.
According to a press release from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly before noon on Tuesday. The victim told police that as she exited a friend’s home at 321 Spring Valley Circle, a man wearing a mask and armed with a gun grabbed a purse that was over her shoulder.
Police report that during the ensuing struggle, the man used the firearm to strike the woman in the side of the face and neck.

 

Clark steps down as offensive coordinator at Emory & Henry

Emory & Henry College announced Wednesday that former Dobyns-Bennett football coach Graham Clark is leaving his role as offensive coordinator due to non-life-threatening health issues.
Clark, a 1977 Emory & Henry graduate, was named the Wasps’ offensive coordinator in June. Assistant coaches Kamden BeCraft and Kevin Saxton will share the role of offensive coordinator for the upcoming season.
“I loved my brief time being back at Emory & Henry College,” Clark said in a school release.

 

Police say Georgia meth connection busted in Scott County sting

GATE CITY — Police report that a “major” distributor of methamphetamine in the region was among three people arrested during a sting in Scott County.
According to information released by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, vice investigators learned that Calvin Lee Allen, 22, would be delivering an ounce of meth from his hometown of Atlanta. Authorities arranged for an undercover informant to make a drug buy from Allen at the State Line gas station in Weber City.

 

Drug investigation leads to arrests at Kingsport motel

BLOUNTVILLE — Two women face multiple charges after meth, a gun and drug paraphernalia were allegedly found in their Lynn Garden motel room.
According to a Wednesday press release from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, the arrests were made Monday night at the Travel Inn, 805 Lynn Garden Drive. The SCSO Vice and Narcotics Unit was reportedly led to the location through a continuing investigation into methamphetamine distribution.
At the motel, detectives spoke with Brittany Thompson, 31, Mount Carmel, and Sandra Vermillion, 45, Church Hill.

 

Church Hill crash claims lives of mother and son

CHURCH HILL — The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed Wednesday that a mother and son who were involved in a crash on Highway 11-W Tuesday were both killed.
The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. when a 2005 Dodge Stratus driven by June Bruner, 85, Mount Carmel, reportedly pulled out from Richmond Street onto Highway 11-W into the path of an oncoming truck.
The truck impacted the Dodge’s driver’s side door. Mrs. Bruner’s son Clair Bruner, 62, Mount Carmel, was in the passenger seat, and both suffered fatal injuries.

 

Race Notes: Maupin earns first win of season at The Gap

Tim Maupin got on top of his race car in victory lane and thrust his arms in the air.
Saturday’s win in the Crate Late Model feature at Volunteer Speedway had been a long time coming. The Johnson City driver of the black No. 3 Chevrolet led all 30 laps around the four-tenths-mile Bulls Gap dirt track on a night when the word “wild” hardly does the action justice.
Maupin first faced off against Jonesborough’s Tim Byrd, who held a one-point lead over Maupin in the championship standings heading into Saturday.

 

Cardinals win keeps K-Mets out of playoffs

KINGSPORT — The Johnson City Cardinals stared into the face of elimination two nights in a row at Hunter Wright Stadium and took it head on.
The Cards won a thrilling Appalachian League West division de facto title game 9-7 and will be playing the Bristol Pirates beginning Friday.
The Mets were eliminated from contention when Bristol defeated Danville 4-2.
The offense got started early for the Cardinals as Diomedes Del Rio hit Johnson City’s fourth grand slam of the season in the top of the second on an 0-2 pitch.

 

Terriers, Paladins are SoCon favorites heading into season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Wofford, Furman and East Tennessee State tied for the 2018 Southern Conference football championship.
Those teams are ranked 1-2-3 heading into the 2019 season according to coaches’ and media polls. Below is a list of team previews as the coaches at the recent Southern Conference football media day touted the strength of the league from top to bottom.
WOFFORD (2018 record: 9-4, 6-2)
The Terriers, who were eliminated in the second round of the FCS playoffs by No. 2 Kennesaw State, bring back eight starters on offense and seven on defense.

 

Eastside cruises to sweep of Lee High

COEBURN — Eastside set the pace early and never let up on the way to a 3-0 nondistrict volleyball sweep over Lee High on Wednesday.
The win was the second in as many nights for the Lady Spartans (2-0). Eastside took a five-set win over Holston on Tuesday.
The loss was the second in a row for Lee High (0-2) which dropped a decision to Rye Cove on Tuesday.
EARLY CONTROL
Eastside jumped ahead in the first set and never trailed in the first two sets on the way to a 25-12, 25-20, 25-13 win over the Lady Generals.
Power on the front line helped Eastside take control from the start.
