Weekend Box Office: 'Zero Dark Thirty' Leads Friday, 'Texas Chainsaw' Plummets

The Friday box office estimates for "Zero Dark Thirty" are in and they are looking good. While it has been playing in limited theaters since Dec. 19, the controversial Kathryn Bigelow movie had its wide release on Friday. "Zero Dark Thirty" made $9 million across 2,937 theaters. The torture scenes in the movie have been the subject of debate, with the most recent input from Sony co-chair Amy Pascal.

This week saw a trio of new releases open this Friday; they’re a diverse bunch, consisting of a crime period piece, an action-drama thriller, and a horror film parody. As you could imagine, a variety of releases unfortunately means a variety of critical reception, and of expected profits for the weekend.
One of these releases is Gangster Squad, a noir-esque film set in 1949 about a mobster by name of Mickey Cohen, and the group of renegade cops who plan to take down his criminal empire.
