In the beginning, there was Arthur Fiedler, a newly built acoustic shell on the Esplanade and his idea for free Boston Pops concerts there. The rest is history. When this photo was taken in July 1929, Fiedler had a full head of dark hair, and the wooden structure had just been inaugurated on the 4th for the city’s first Independence Day concert.
