BY SHEILA STOGSDILL For The OklahomanJAY — The American Boxing Association, along with the family of late heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison, is hoping a memorial dedicated to the boxer is the one-two punch needed to honor his athletic legacy but also to overcoming mistakes. Jim Roach, American Boxing Association president, spoke with Jay School Board members on June 29 about placing a life-size bronze bust of Morrison on the school campus. “It looks very promising,” Roach said. The $12,000 monument would be a fixture at Bulldog Arena, and the association would pick up the tab for the bust. “Tommy was a tremendous athlete,” Roach said, referring to Morrison’s boxing and football days. Roach said the boxer “also had his ups and downs,” referring to Morrison’s run-ins with law enforcement on gun and drug violations. “We all have had our ups and downs,” Roach said. If approved at the July 14 regular school board meeting, the bronze bust would be unveiled at the Tommy Morrison 8-man boxing tournament that is scheduled Jan.Read more on NewsOK.com
