In Indonesia, it’s possible to say “yes” by using a dozen different words – and perhaps just as many ways to say “no” – but still mean “yes.” In certain societies, Carlos Cortés continued in remarks to an audience of several hundred at the University of New Mexico, “no,” can be an offensive term, just like “It doesn’t matter to me,” in some cultures means “It most certainly does mean a lot to me.” Cortés was talking about the nuance of language, one of a half dozen elements of the challenges that may arise in establishing a mentor relationship in a multicultural society.
