DENTON - North Texas suffered a pair of tough losses to Florida Atlantic last season, including a blowout in the Conference USA title game.An unlikely hero helped the Mean Green exact some revenge on Thursday at Apogee Stadium.Quinn Shanbour, a seldom-used backup quarterback scored two key touchdowns in the second half to give UNT a 10-point lead.UNT made the key plays from there to pull away for a 41-38 win.There wasn’t nearly as much on the line in the rematch of last season’s C-USA title game, but that didn’t make any difference to the Mean Green (8-3, 4-3 C-USA) who lost 69-31 and 41-17 to the Owls (5-6, 3-4) last year.The third game between the teams since the beginning of last season was a whole lot more dramatic on a chilly night in front of a crowd of 18,338.UNT took a 17-point lead early, blew it and turned to Shanbour after Mason Fine was briefly knocked out of the game.The Mean Green’s clutch play late marked a dramatic turn after the Mean Green blew a 28-point lead in a loss to Old Dominion last week.Two of the biggest plays came from the most unlikely of players in Shanbour.Fine went down in the third quarter after FAU came with a blitz on third-and-4 from the Owls’ 15-yard line.Safety Jalen Young and linebacker Rashad Smith converged on Fine and crushed him in the pocket.
