WASHINGTON — The Senate Committee on the Judiciary on Thursday approved President Donald Trump's nomination of state Public Defender Mary McElroy to the federal bench in Rhode Island.In contrast to the rancorous hearing into U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the committee members present Thursday approved McElroy, the state’s first female chief public defender, along with eight other U.S.
