An Albuquerque city councilor wants to know why APD officers retire, and a bill up for a vote tonight aims to answer the question. Councilor Diane Gibson, a Democrat, is sponsoring legislation that would call for an independent group to survey retiring officers and ask them why they are leaving the Albuquerque Police Department. She said she wants a clear picture on what is driving down the number of officers. “The intention here is to get data and make better-informed decisions regarding (officer) retention,” City Councilor Diane Gibson says. Gibson’s bill states that despite being budgeted for 1,000 officers, APD currently has roughly 900 – and only about 650 of those are assigned to field services. Gibson said the 52 police officers who retired in 2014 would be surveyed anonymously and a report on the survey’s findings would be created.
