A self-driving tractor-trailer carried beer from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs — a more than 120-mile trip — last week in what brewer Anheuser-Busch says was the world’s first commercial shipment of its kind.
Anheuser-Busch says the truck was filled with Budweiser beer and that a driver monitored the highway trip from a sleeper berth on the vehicle.
“This milestone marks the first time in history that a self-driving vehicle has shipped commercial cargo, making it a landmark achievement for self-driving technology, the state of Colorado, and the transportation industry,” the brewer said on Tuesday.
The trip happened on Thursday and came as part of a partnership with Otto, a self-driving truck maker that recently paired with ride-hailing service Uber, and state officials.
A video from the trip showed the driver apparently getting up from the wheel and heading back to the sleeping berth as the vehicle traveled down Interstate 25.
The semi began its journey at Anheuser-Busch’s facility in Loveland and departed for its journey from the Fort Collins weigh station.
“As we continue to partner with long-haul carriers to ship our beers, we hope to see this technology widely deployed across our highways to improve safety for all road users and work towards a low-emissions future,” James Sembrot, senior director for logistics strategy at Anheuser-Busch, said in a statement.

Never forget that you’re living in the future. A time when it’s no longer necessary to leave the house in order to refresh your supply of cheesy, salty snack food. Heck, you don’t even have to log onto Amazon. As of today, order a box of Cheez-It crackers is as simple as hitting a small, plastic button.
