A 62-year-old Oakland woman who kept almost 100 cats in her home was sentenced to five years' probation Friday following a felony conviction for animal cruelty. Jan Van Dusen, an attorney who lives in West Oakland, is also banned from owning animals for 10 years, must perform 200 hours of community service, undergo mental health counseling and pay Oakland Animal Services $40,000 for the costs of caring for the animals. In October 2011, Oakland animal control officers raided her Magnolia Street home, based on neighbors' complaints about the stench, and found 93 cats on the property in various stages of ill health.
