A growing number of Bay Area cities from Oakland and Berkeley, San Jose to San Mateo are seeing the sometimes odd and mysterious appearance of knitted creations on their streets -- and sometimes sponsoring more organized 'yarn bombing events' -- that add a little bit of color, whimsy or even make a social or political statement by covering everything from bike racks, benches, fire hydrants, trees and statues.
