Lee's International Taekwondo is one of few businesses still open in Valley View Mall.In its dojang -- the taekwondo practice room, in Korean -- Kevin Baltazar, 15, Karla Montoya, 14, and Jonathan López, 13, have been training six days a week for several months preparing for their first international competition.This taekwondo training center is located among dozens of empty shops, with little lighting and insufficient air conditioning in a mall where most entrances have been boarded up.The only remaining businesses in Valley View Mall are an AMC theater, a few boutiques and art galleries, a Mexican candy shop, and Lee's International Taekwondo, where close to 50 students still hold sparring sessions.As the shopping center plans to close its doors for good, these teens are launching a career in taekwondo.Baltazar, Montoya and López were selected by the Texas Taekwondo Association after finishing among the top qualifiers in the state tournament and passing other tests to compete in South Korea this weekend.The students had their last combat practice Tuesday, a day before flying to Asia.Each competed in two-minute sparring rounds with padded helmets, belts protecting their ribs, and forearm safeguards.In the gymnasium's stands, parents and other students cheered them up: "Move up!
