Jews have been present in France since the Roman times. First documents with names date back to the 13th century, but recording of civil information does not start until 18th century, and only in some places. In the second half of the 18th century several censuses take place, prior to the introduction of a universal civil records scheme. In 1808, all Jews in France (and other parts of the then extended Napoleon Empire) are individually listed.
