I get the logic behind the recent "practical rennaisance". I really do. I know as well as anyone that we've been in an era of boundless CGI entertainment for so long that people are becoming desensitized to pure spectacle. I think back to the last 3 years, 2011-2014, when it seemed like every single blockbuster contained at least 3 skyscrapers (if not an entire cityscape) tumbling down in glorious CGI detail.
