Mikko Rantanen finished captain’s practice Thursday with Avalanche veterans while the team’s rookies and other young players had physicals and off-ice testing in preparation for the start of rookie camp Friday. Rantanen, 20, smiled when asked if he feels like an established NHL player, given that he wasn’t asked to go through another rookie camp. “It’s nice to be with the veteran guys and train hard with them,” said Rantanen, Colorado’s 2015 first-round draft pick (10th overall). A year ago, before his rookie NHL season, Rantanen suffered an ankle injury in a rookie-showcase game against the San Jose Sharks‘ youngsters.
