A night after knocking off No. 23 Syracuse in the semifinals of the 2K Classic, the Bears were unable to keep up with No. 10 Texas on Friday — even though the Longhorns were without leading scorer Isaiah Taylor. Cal fell 71-55 at Madison Square Garden in the tournament’s championship game, absorbing its first loss of the season. The Longhorns, who lost Taylor, their starting point guard, to a left wrist injury Thursday, jumped out to a big early lead and relied on their smothering defense to keep the Bears from cutting too far into it. Cal beat Syracuse 73-59 for its first big victory under first-year coach Cuonzo Martin, but never led in this one after the opening minute. Cal cut its deficit to 43-36 with 13:30 remaining after five straight points by Wallace, but Texas answered with a 5-0 run to push its lead back to double figures.
