River Watch construction to cause delays through next week

River Watch Parkway travelers should expect delays through next week as lanes shrink from three to two.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, crews reduced the amount of lanes between Claussen Road and Alexander Drive as part of the $5.3 million project aimed at improved travel in the area of the Interstate 20 interchange. The closures, which affect both directions of travel, will be in effect 24 hours a day until Nov. 11.

 

Florida face-biting attacker: 'I ate something bad ... humans'

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Florida college student accused of killing a couple and chewing on the dead man's face told deputies, "Help me, I ate something bad" and then admitted it was "humans" as he spit out a piece of flesh, court documents show.
Austin Harrouff, 19, also begged deputies to kill him after they pulled him off John Stevens' body, according to the records, obtained Monday by the Palm Beach Post.
"Shoot me now, I deserve to die," Harrouff said.

 

Ex-Georgia Southern, Swainsboro receiver Andrews killed in car wreck

Legendary Georgia Southern head football coach Erk Russell once made a comment to Brandon Andrews about his little brother, Raja.
Brandon was a senior running back when Raja was a redshirt freshman receiver trying to play in his brother's shadow.
Brandon Andrews was heavily recruited after racking up 2,814 rushing yards in 2000 at Swainsboro High, which is ranked third in the Georgia high school record books for rushing yards in a single season.
The 5-foot-8 Raja Andrews was a preferred walk-on.

 

Police: Six dead after buses collide in Baltimore

BALTIMORE  — Police say a school bus and a commuter bus crashed in Baltimore, killing six people.
Baltimore Police tweeted that no children were aboard the school bus that crashed early Tuesday morning.
Baltimore public schools spokeswoman Anne Fullerton says no students are among the fatalities.
University of Maryland Medical Center spokeswoman Lisa Clough says the hospital received one patient in critical condition and four others in fair condition.

 

Prices at pump expected to increase

Just as gas prices were on the way down, they could be headed back up due to an explosion at Colonial Pipeline.
"We were just beginning to recover from the gas price hikes we saw from the pipeline closure in September," said Garrett Townsend, Georgia public affairs director of AAA. "The explosion will at least temporarily put a halt to the pump-price dip we've experienced over the past 30 days."

Thomson remains No. 2 in Class AAAA poll

One of the area's top games slightly affected the latest Georgia Sports Writers Association High School Football Poll released Tuesday.
Thomson beat Burke County 20-7 this past Friday to win the Region 3-AAAA championship and improve to 9-0. The Bulldogs remained No. 2 in Class AAAA behind undefeated Cartersville, while the Bears slipped two spots to No. 10.
Jefferson County held firm at No. 3 in Class AA after beating Josey. Screven County moved up one spot to No. 8 and Washington County did the same to No. 9.

 

Authorities: At least 7 injured in Alabama pipeline blast

HELENA, Ala. - An explosion along the Colonial Pipeline in rural Alabama injured at least seven workers Monday not far from where the line burst and leaked gasoline last month, authorities said.
The blast, which sent flames and thick black smoke soaring over the forest, happened about a mile west of where the pipeline ruptured in September, Gov. Robert Bentley said. That break led to gasoline shortages across the South.
"We'll just hope and pray for the best," Bentley said.

 

Riverwatch Parkway traffic backed up

Commuters are experiencing delays on Riverwatch Parkway this evening.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, delays are being caused by construction work and the left thru-lane in westbound Riverwatch is closed. The site is marked and the sheer volume of traffic is causing the delay, according to Lt. Allan Rollins.
"Patience is the order of the day," Rollins said.

 

Ex-wife: Father cared deeply for child who died in hot car

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The ex-wife of a man charged with murder after their toddler son died in a hot SUV shed tears for her boy on the witness stand Monday while testifying that her former husband would not have left him to die on purpose.
Leanna Taylor told a jury she tried to be strong for Justin Ross Harris after learning on June 18, 2014, that their only child was dead after Harris left the boy in his car's back seat all day after driving to his job in metro Atlanta.

 

Augusta man pleads to reduced charge in rape, kidnapping trial

An Augusta man accused of rape and kidnapping in the assault on a woman who befriended him pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge.
Ricky Lee Darby, 43, pleaded in Richmond County Superior Court to one count of false imprisonment. Judge Sheryl B. Jolly accepted the plea negotiation and imposed a 10-year prison term.
Darby will get credit for the time he has been held in jail since the Nov. 2, 2014, crime.
