A member of Utah’s State Charter School Board has stepped down, citing time constraints and difficulty attending meetings.
Greg Haws, who joined the charter board last year, resigned his seat on July 24 during a personal conversation with board chairwoman Kristen Elinkowski.
Haws said he has missed board meetings because of the commute to Salt Lake City from St. George — where he resides for roughly half the year — and expected more absences due to an upcoming surgery.

Salt Lake County attorneys are studying how to keep the recorder’s office running as the county Republican Party works to find a replacement for outgoing Recorder Gary Ott, whose court-approved resignation takes effect Tuesday.
The action follows a review released Monday by State Auditor John Dougall, who questioned whether Ott’s deputy had authority to make financial decisions for the office before the county Republican Party chooses a replacement who will serve until the 2018 election.

Run 4 Refugees, a charity race event started by Lehi locals, is again raising funds and this year’s recipients will get goats.
The event includes a 5K and 10K race, as well as a family and kid friendly 1-mile run/walk. The race will be held at Sky Ridge High School in Lehi on Saturday at 8 a.m.

A body found last month in the Jordan River has been identified as a West Jordan woman.
The body of 44-year-old Zephera Smith was pulled from the river in Taylorsville on July 21, the Unified Police Department announced Monday.
A cause of death has not yet been determined by the medical examiner’s office, said UPD Detective Ken Hansen, noting that toxicology test results are still pending.
He said the woman, who is married, was last seen earlier on the day her body was found.

A West Valley charter school for pregnant teens and young mothers has one last chance to keep its doors open.
Members of the Utah Board of Education will hear an appeal by Kairos Academy, board spokeswoman Emilie Wheeler said Monday, following the termination of the charter school in July by the State Charter School Board.

The FBI has paid out a $50,000 reward to two people who provided information that led to the June 14 arrest of Lyle Jeffs, who had absconded a year earlier while awaiting trial in a federal food stamp fraud case.
The reward money was divided proportionally between the two unnamed recipients, based on their level of assistance, the FBI said Monday.

While by-mail ballots have been in the hands of Utah voters for about a week, the option of in-person early voting begins Tuesday in advance of the Aug. 15 primary.

West Bountiful Police Chief Todd Hixon said Monday that while searchers found John Darrell Page 2005 Ford Explorer over the weekend, there was no trace of Page.
