SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Biden administration will seek to partially end the 27-year-old court supervision of how the federal government cares for child migrants traveling alone, shortly after producing its own list of safeguards against mistreatment, an attorney involved in the case says.
The Justice Department has told opposing attorneys it will ask a federal judge on Friday to terminate the so-called Flores agreement at the U.
WEST PALM BEACH — Under blue skies, officials at Florida’s largest power company dealt Thursday with the aftermath of a major hurricane that slammed into Miami and Fort Lauderdale — or a pretend one, anyway.
Florida Power & Light is conducting its annual mock hurricane drill this week, simulating how it would respond if a hurricane struck the state and devastated the power grid.

Keying in on a central part of Daniels’ testimony about her encounter with Trump, defense lawyer Susan Necheles during hush money trial proceedings Thursday skeptically asked Daniels about having appeared in porn movies with “naked women and naked men” yet being startled by Trump on a bed in a t-shirt and boxers.
Daniels said that coming out of the bathroom to find a man twice her age “in his underwear, you’re not expecting to be there” was different.
“This was not the first time in your life someone had made a pass at you?” Necheles asked at one point.
“It is the first time they had a bodyguard standing outside the door … and were in their underwear and were twice my age,” Daniels shot back.
She later said her “own insecurities” kept her from refusing.
Trump, 77, has pleaded not guilty to felony charges alleging he covered up a $130,000 reimbursement to fixer Michael Cohen for handling the hush money payoff to Daniels, logging it in the books as payment for legal fees.
Necheles repeatedly cast doubt on Daniels’ account, at one point asking her if she is experienced in fabricating “phony sex stories” as a porn star to which Daniels replied that the sex was “very real.”
“If this story wasn’t true, I would have written it to be a lot better,” Daniels snapped back a few moments later, to some apparent amusement from jurors.
As Daniels described how Trump sat on his hotel room couch the night of their tryst, he furrowed his brow, looking mad and a little disgusted.
Having argued landmark privacy cases before the Florida Supreme Court, I’m saddened to see the court rule that a woman’s ability to have an abortion is no longer protected under the Florida Constitution. As a lover of the rule of law, the sadness is in watching the court devolve into a third political branch of government, where decisions appear to be based upon the personal beliefs and political agendas of the justices and the governor who appoints them.
Respect for the law depends upon the public perceiving that judicial determinations are based upon underlying legal principles rather than a court’s current personnel.
Our governor appointed supreme court justices with reported anti-abortion credentials, leading pundits to predict that the court would deliver on that agenda.

Tests have detected the virus among cattle in nine states, mainly in Texas and New Mexico, and most recently in Colorado, said Nirav Shah, principal deputy director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at a May 1 event held by the Council on Foreign Relations.
A menagerie of other animals have been infected by H5N1, and at least one person in Texas.
