City Hall is ready to talk trash with North Valley residents. A public meeting on Tuesday will focus on Albuquerque’s plan to build a transfer station near Edith and Comanche NE, where garbage trucks would drop off the trash they collect on their daily routes. Larger trucks would then collect and carry the trash out to the West Side landfill. Michael Riordan, the city’s chief operations officer, said the plan should save $2.5 million to $4.5 million a year in fuel, and reduced wear and tear. But nearby residents aren’t convinced. “There’s great concern within the community, not the least of which is the environmental concerns – the air, the stink, the rodents,” said David Wood, president of the Greater Gardner Neighborhood Association.
