Science fiction is a genre that allows impressive creativity, but it’s often not the best source for prophecy about the future. Technology is difficult to predict, because it often develops in response to new needs or changing situations that are difficult to imagine. Most sci-fi visionaries missed the creation of LCD displays, for example; the idea that it might be beneficial if displays were thinner wasn’t obvious until research made large LCD panels possible.
