Christopher Nolan and his use of exposition

Christopher Nolan is a controversial director here on /r/movies, and a common flaw that is stated is that his films are filled with exposition. I've seen people argue against it by saying that it's lazy and in excessive amounts, an insult to the viewers, and I've seen people defend it by saying without it, Nolan's films would be far too complex to understand for the average movie goer.
