One of the most important breakthroughs in biology happened in 2013, and you probably didn’t hear about it. The breakthrough came from research into bacterial “immune systems”, which allow bacteria to identify viral DNA and edit it to be harmless. Scientists adapted that research into CRISPR, a tool that allows them to swap arbitrary pieces of DNA — in nearly any organism — with synthetic sequences.
