Oklahoma Legislature passes bill extending probationary promotions for third-graders with reading difficulties

By Randy Ellis, Staff WriterThe Oklahoma Legislature passed a bill Friday to extend for three academic years a program that allows probationary promotions for third-grade students who read below grade level. Senate Bill 630 now goes to the governor. “The changes we are making give us the flexibility we need at the local level, but are still designed to ensure Oklahoma students are acquiring the reading skills necessary to succeed,” said Senate Education Chairman John Ford, R-Bartlesville. “I am grateful to the Legislature for ensuring we continue to build momentum with literacy while also continuing to foster parent engagement with strategic reading interventions for students,” said state schools Superintendent Joy Hofmeister.Read more on NewsOK.com
