From “Donnie Darko” to “Southland Tales,” a look at the strange cult of Richard Kelly before his Alamo visit

So many films are miscast as “cult movies” these days that it’s easy to think a director or a studio can actually choose which of them gets to be considered a grassroots, underdog fan-favorite. Simply slapping that term on a weird, poorly received, mid-budget movie does not a cult film make. The internet may have united obsessives of every last cultural artifact, but genuine movie cults take time to develop.
