Boulder County declares its government buildings to be “Safe Zones”

Boulder County on Thursday morning installed posters assuring employees working in its government buildings, as well as visitors to those buildings, that they’re in a “Safe Zone.” There are English and Spanish versions of the posters, which state: “This space respects all aspects of people including race, ethnicity, gender expression, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, political affiliation, age, religion, body shape, size and ability.” Gabi Boerkircher, a spokeswoman for the Boulder County commissioners’ office, said the county plans to have at least one poster near a first-floor entrance to each of its buildings, and county departments and agencies can request additional signs if they want them. Elise Jones, chairwoman of the Board of County Commissioners, said the safe-zone poster installations were triggered by an “outpouring of concerns” county officials have been hearing from residents alarmed by rhetoric during the presidential election campaign and the election of Donald Trump as president. Jones said there had been “a real climate of uncertainty” among members of the community about whether they’ll be threatened because of being Latino, undocumented immigrants or members of the LGBT community, including concerns about “what big changes” might result from Trump’s presidency.
