Giants’ Panik candidate for concussion DL

Giants’ Panik candidate for concussion DL A day after he got hit hard at the plate, he took more vision and balance tests and passed them all. The Giants might make that choice easy for him. Panik was knocked down in the doubleheader nightcap in Washington as he tried to score. The ball thrown from the outfield plunked him on his head right as Nationals catcher Matt Wieters applied the tag to the head. Panik, who seemed dazed after the play but stayed in the game, had a scheduled day off Monday anyway, manager Bruce Bochy said. Considering Panik’s concussion issues in 2016, the Giants need to be especially careful and cautious. The likely roster replacement would be Orlando Calixte, who was the Giants’ 26th man for Sunday’s doubleheader. Pablo Sandoval’s right-handed hitting (3-for-25 on the season, 0-for-5 as a Giant) wasn’t spectacular, but Bochy put the third baseman in the lineup with the Marlins starting a lefty, Adam Conley. If Sandoval truly is part of the Giants’ future, they need to see if he can produce from the right side. With the doubleheader, the Giants needed someone to make a spot start, and the choice was Cain over Albert Suarez, who threw 27 pitches Sunday.
