Twenty-two states have joined Colorado in requesting that the U.S. Supreme Court decide whether the people selected to make Electoral College votes for president are bound by their state’s rules on how they should vote, the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office announced Wednesday. If the Supreme Court takes up the issue, it could change the way the nation selects its president in the 2020 election. The case stems from the 2016 election, when three Democratic Party electors wanted to vote for Republican John Kasich, then governor of Ohio, as part of a national effort to deny Donald Trump the Electoral College votes he needed to win the presidential election.
