McConnell Faces Risks in Advancing a Trump Supreme Court Replacement for Ginsburg

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell moved quickly Friday evening to say he would advance a nominee to succeed Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, just hours after her death. In a statement released by his office, the Kentucky Republican vowed to move ahead with President Donald Trump’s pick to fill the seat: “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the Senate.” McConnell’s statement echoes comments he made in May of 2019 when asked about an election-year opening: “We’d fill it.” McConnell’s declaration sets in motion a fast and fraught six weeks in the run up to Election Day on Nov.
