As I See It: Bringing high-tech jobs to low-income areas

Sometimes common-sense solutions to entrenched problems are hard to sell. Exhibit A is the shortage of mid- to high-tech private and public sector jobs in many of Virginia’s rural areas, especially in the coalfields of far Southwest Virginia.
Most people generally know that the three major coal and natural gas counties of Dickenson, Buchanan and Wise are ranked as some of the poorest counties in the state. More specifically, they rank in poverty as follows: Dickenson No. 1, Buchanan No. 5 and Wise No. 11, out of 134 Virginia counties and cities.

 

Jean Arnold

Wilma Jean Arnold, 88, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019.
She was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and was a member of Ketron Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir. Jean had retired from Glidden Paint Co. but the job she truly loved was that as the secretary at Cedar Grove Elementary School. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Betty Testerman; husband, Charles W. Arnold; son, Charles “Chuck” Arnold; sister, V.

 

Ronald Jones

Ronald Jones, 72, passed from this life on Monday evening, August 5, 2019, in his Greeneville home after a courageous battle with cancer.
He is the son of the late Casey H. and Kathleen Jones of Erwin.
He was employed by Eastman Kodak/Kingsport for over 20 years. He was founder and owner of RPC Specialty Coatings. He served on the board of Directors for Holston Home for Children, which was dear to his heart. He was a longtime supporter of the Boys and Girls Club, the NWTF (National Wild Turkey Federation), establishing the Volunteer Long beards Chapter in Greene County.

 

Barbara Corliss Bemrich

Barbara Corliss Bemrich passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was born October 20, 1954 in Oakland, California to Louise Hill and Clark Howard Corliss. She was a graduate of Trinity University. Barbara married Stephen Bemrich on May 14, 1975 and they began their lifelong adventure. They raised their 3 children, Christina, Rob, and Rebecca across the world. While raising her children she completed her master’s degree in education from Alabama A&M University, working as a teacher wherever her travels brought her.

 

Josephine Morgan Wilson

EAST STONE GAP, VA - Josephine Morgan Wilson, 91, died Thursday, August 08, 2019 at her home in East Stone Gap, VA.
Born in Esserville, VA, November 30, 1927, she was a daughter of John and Effie Morgan. Her husband, William Howard Wilson preceded her in death in 2017.
She is survived by her children: Lanny H.

 

Kingsport police seek tips on car lot thefts

KINGSPORT -- A pair of people who were videoed while stealing auto parts at a Kingsport dealership may be linked to similar crimes across the Tri-Cities.
According to a Thursday press release from Kingsport police, images of the suspects were captured during a July 14 incident at Fairway Ford, 2761 E. Stone Dr. At about 11 p.m. the couple allegedly stole a tailgate and set of tail ligths from costumers' vehicle. Police say they are "believed to be involved in additional similar crimes at other car dealerships," but no information on those alleged crimes was provided.

 

Hawkins mom allegedly beat kids with whip for preventing her from driving drunk

ROGERSVILLE – A Hawkins County woman was charged with aggravated child abuse Wednesday evening after she allegedly beat her two children with a bull whip when they tried to prevent her from driving drunk.
Around 5:25 p.m. Wednesday HCSO Deputy Billy Begley responded to a complaint of an intoxicated woman beating her children with a whip at a residence on Laurel Branch Road in the Pressmen's Home community north of Rogersville.

 

Jessie "Earlean" Barton

SURGOINSVILLE - Jessie “Earlean” Barton 72 of Surgoinsville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, August 7, 2019.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Barton; Parents Ray and Effie Christian; along with several brothers, and sisters.
Survivors include her daughter, Pamela England and husband Clyde; son, Greg Barton; the loves of her life her grandchildren, Derringer and Colby Barton; granddaughter, Taylor Pearson; sister, Lura Gray; special niece, Shelby Light; cousin, Penny Christian; along with several nieces and nephews.
