WISE — Virginia-Wise football ended its preseason camp on Sunday and has moved into its regular-season practice schedule in anticipation of its first game as a member of the South Atlantic Conference on Sept. 7. Coach Dane Damron, speaking on the Cavaliers’ social media network over the weekend, said he was pleased overall with camp, but he was quick to say there’s still plenty of work to do before the Cavs open the season at home against nonconference foe Chowan. Several younger players caught the attention of the coaching staff during the camp, including freshman punter Drew Vermillion of Gate City. “He’s definitely shown that he’s got a chance at being our punter,” Damron said.
