Elected officials have called for an independent review of corrosion inside the new $6.5 billion San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. They said their concerns stemmed from a Sacramento Bee investigation published Sunday that identified rust inside a supposedly protected chamber where the new spans main suspension cable is attached. The strands of the main cable of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge suspension span are anchored in two chambers with each chamber designed to be sealed against water and are dehumidified. Here plastic tape was used to bind steel wires that make up each strand.
