DENVER - The Giants placed Matt Cain on the disabled list and recalled Chris Stratton on Saturday. Cain had an MRI a day after straining his right hamstring on a second-inning pitch. Stratton goes to long relief, and Albert Suarez is a good bet to start Wednesday in Atlanta in Cain’s place — so long as he’s not needed in the meantime. The Giants have off days June 6 and June 9, so Cain’s spot in the rotation technically could come up just once over 15 days, the minimum required DL time. “We’ll see how the workload goes,” said manager Bruce Bochy, who usually prefers to give his starters the extra rest rather than skipping someone. Center fielder Denard Span was scratched form the lineup with a bruised right hip, a result of banging into the AT&T Park wall at the end of the homestand. Hunter Pence (hamstring) is in the lineup for the first time in seven games, and Brandon Belt (ankle) is back at first base after Buster Posey played first Friday. “In these situations,” Bochy said, referring to Pence, you rely on the player and training staff. “He had to step in and kick some dirt on the plate,” Stratton said. Giants lineup: CF Blanco, 2B Panik, 3B Duffy, C Posey, 1B Belt, RF Pence, LF Parker, SS Crawford, LH Bumgarner. John Shea is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
