After the disturbing press conference, in which the commissioner tried to explain away for the league's lousy record on domestic violence and abuse, NFL owners have to be asking themselves: The commissioner's account of what former Ravens running back Rice told him about the tragic encounter with his then-fiancee is at odds with several other accounts. After his press conference, ESPN released a report stating at least one member of the Ravens' staff had seen the inside-the-elevator video just hours after Rice knocked out his fiancee. Goodell said Friday that transparency will be vital in the rebuilding the league's image and reputation, especially relating to the investigation of the Rice videos. Goodell says he's learning to deal with delicate issues, but when it comes to matters like domestic violence, doesn't the National Football League need more than a $44 million-per-year leader wobbling along on sensitivity training wheels? Goodell's original two-game suspension, after watching video of Rice dragging his unconscious partner out of an Atlantic City, N.J., elevator, is still shocking. Since almost the beginning of Goodell's tenure there has been an ongoing controversy over what some see as his frontier justice, and the players union has been demanding a personal-conduct policy.
