Mike Nichols – Academy Award-winning director of The Graduate – has died at the age of 83. Born in Berlin in 1931, Nichols' family fled to America just before the outbreak of WWII, and he made his name directing stage-plays before moving into movies. His first feature was the critically acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf in 1966, while he made biggest hit The Graduate a year later, and is one of the fe people to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, a Tony and an Oscar. Nichols other films include Wolf, Working Girl, The Birdcage, Closer, Postcards From the Edge, Catch-22 and his last feature – 2007’s Charlie Wilson’s War. He also directed the hugely important and influential mini-series Angels in America, while onstage he oversaw the first productions of Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple and Spamalot.
