Spider-Senses might have been tingling for some theatergoers during Zendayas new film Challengers this weekend. Specifically, those Marvel and superhero fans in attendance undoubtedly heard Tashi (Zendaya) and Arts (Mike Faist) daughter, Lily, asking to watch the animated Spider-Verse rather than something more from the world of tennis, which consumes her parents lives.
Though his love triangle film has parallels to his wife Celine Song's filmmaking debut "Past Lives," screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes would not classify "Challengers" as auto-fiction in the same way.
"Come on!" Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh OConnors torrid on-screen tryst lays claim to the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office with an estimated $15 million domestically during its theatrical debut. Challengers also performed well overseas as the steamy sports romance made an additional $10 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $25 million (per The Numbers).
