Herbert Schandler, 87, a soldier and scholar who was an Army Special Forces officer in Vietnam, later earned a doctorate at Harvard, and wrote several books about the war in which he fought, died July 16 at his home in McLean, Va. He had complications related to Parkinson's disease, said a daughter, Sarah Schandler Counts.
