Among the telltale signs, the movie insists on details that are distracting and yet ultimately don't matter, such as the lead character's smoking in virtually every scene. Throughout there is the sense of real people being protected, or at least of the writer-director protecting her memory of them. [...] the movie has the structure of daily life, which is really no structure, just one incident on top of the other. [...] if it were less sincere, less honest and less tasteful, it could form the basis of a situation comedy. Usually in movies about bipolar disorder, the afflicted person is able to dazzle people and accomplish great things, but every time Cameron tries to assert himself, he fails. For all of Ruffalo's natural appeal, and despite the character's winning affection as a father, the audience can see why his wife has lost her attraction for him.
