The Weinstein Company is re-releasing the boxing drama in 300 theaters today, hoping to give Gyllenhaal's acclaimed performance an added boost in the Oscar race. In a statement, The Weinstein Company’s Erik Lomis, President of Theatrical Distribution & Home Entertainment, said the re-release will "give more serious-minded audiences who may have missed it the first time around a chance to see a film that we feel is a very serious contender." Directed by Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day") and co-written by Kurt Sutter ("Sons of Anarchy"), "Southpaw" stars Gyllenhaal as Billy "The Great" Hope, Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World.
