The second-seeded Nishikori was serving at 4-5, 0-40 before rallying to beat the 62nd-ranked South African, who fired 14 aces without allowing any by his opponent. Second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France remained on course for a third ATP World Tour title of the season with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Karen Khachanov of Russia. Top pick Kelsey Plum made her WNBA debut for San Antonio and scored her first points on a jumper from the free-throw line to give San Antonio a 29-28 lead.
