Music@Menlo review: strong as 1 or apart Friday's concert at the Menlo-Atherton Center for the Performing Arts - the latest installment in the 10th season of the Music@Menlo chamber music festival - was one of those. Under the rubric "Transported," Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han had assembled an evening of music evocative of distant places - China, Spain and even the afterlife. The one obvious exception was "Voces Intimae" ("Intimate Voices"), Sibelius' broodingly eloquent late string quartet, and that turned out to be the concert's most memorable component. Violinist Jorja Fleezanis and pianist Jeffrey Kahane also joined forces for "Romance of Hsiao and Ch'in," a jaunty, sweet-toned bagatelle by composer Chen Yi's that is steeped in the pentatonic scales of traditional Chinese music.
