Damon Lindelof says he is mindful of comments that scene with British actor Alice Eve in her bra and pants is gratuitousDamon Lindelof, the writer of Star Trek Into Darkness, has apologised for a "gratuitous" scene during the new sci-fi sequel in which British actor Alice Eve appears in her underwear.Lindelof, who is also the co-creator of Lost, took to Twitter after fans pointed out the unnecessary nature of the offending segue, in which science officer Carol Marcus strips down to a bra and knickers while preparing to pull on a special torpedo disarming outfit."I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely clothed actress," he wrote, adding: "We also had Kirk shirtless in underpants in both movies, [but I] do not want to make light of something that some construe as misogynistic. What I'm saying is I hear you, I take responsibility and will be more mindful in the future."Lindelof's follower Kristen McHugh summed up the general response to the scene when she wrote: "I kinda enjoyed that Dr Marcus told Kirk (and the audience) to put their eyes back in their heads. But overall: less male gaze, more speaking and non-object roles for women, please." User Devon Faraci wrote: "You had [Kirk] shirtless both times in situations where it made sense. Carol's scene was gratuitous."However, another of Lindelof's followers, Mark Newbold, wrote: "I can't tell if you are being serious or tongue in cheek. I hope the latter. Trek is supposed to be sexy and randy, it always was." And user Chris Blohm added: "Damon, please don't feel as if you have to skimp on future Kirk/underpant situations because of this."Damon also appeared sheepish in an email to MTV on the subject. "Why is Alice Eve in her underwear, gratuitously and unnecessarily, without any real effort made as to why in God's name she would undress in that circumstance?" He asked. No one succeeds at failure like the Coen Brothers. From exuberant comic dazzlers (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski) to muted  character studies (The Man Who Wasn’t There, A Serious Man), their lead characters are expert underachievers, whose relentless, blackly humorous misfortunes are lovingly detailed by their unforgiving makers. The Coens, unlike their creations, get the job done. Like Bob Dylan, Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is a Minnesotan Jew who headed to New York – just like the Coens themselves – striving to make it in the early 1960s folk music scene. He’s already cut a record as part of a duo (Marcus Mumford, minus Sons), whose partner killed himself and now he’s left peddling a solo effort, Inside Llewyn Davis, around Greenwich Village, scraping together coffee shop gigs, getting stiffed by his penny-pinching manager and, in an early scene, beaten up for seemingly no reason. Refresh for latest… There’s a Scandinavian flavor to Cannes Briefs this morning. Zentropa and Nordisk Film are to produce the adaptation of the 1945 Swedish bestseller The Long Ships with director and writer under negoatiations. Author Frans Gunnar Bengtsson’s adventure novel is set in the 10th century and tells the story of Red Orm, a Viking who embarks on a journey that ends up changing the course of history. Zentropa CEO Peter Aalbæk Jensen (Nymphomaniac) is producing with Sisse Graum Jørgensen (The Hunt, The Salvation). Exec producer is Lone Korslund (Headhunters, Kon-Tiki). Rainmark Films’ Tracey Scoffield and Frank Doelger, in partnership with Germany’s Beta, have acquired film rights to Derek B. Miller’s novel Norwegian By Night. The company is developing the project from the American-born writer with a director soon to be attached. The story follows an 82-year-old widower and ex-Marine who lives in Oslo with his granddaughter and her Norwegian husband. When he witnesses the murder of a woman in his apartment complex, he rescues her son and races across the Norwegian wilderness, chased by the murderers and the police. The deal was struck with Miller’s literary agency Janklow & Nesbit. Rainmark produced the Cannes official selection title Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight, which screens Wednesday, and Doelger is exec producer of Game Of Thrones. Scandinavian sales outfit TrustNordisk found good fortunes with its promo reels in Berlin, closing a number of deals at that market. It’s now sold Lukas Moodysson’s We Are The Best to several distributors based on a three-minute promo presented here in Cannes on Saturday. Metrodome picked it up for the UK, Wild Bunch has Benelux, Frenetic took it for Switzerland and Continental Film acquired it in ex-Yugoslavia. The film is based on a graphic novel by Coco Moodysson and tells the story of three outsiders in 1980s Stockholm who start a punk band even though everyone says punk is dead. Its local release is set for October 2013.
