Helen Drexler, the chief executive officer for Delta Dental of Colorado, has added one more title to her resume: Tortilla Titan. She earned it after fashioning what the judges decided was the perfect tortilla at Tortillas for Tepeyac, a luncheon and “masa smackdown” where she and 18 other civic leaders competed for six prizes while raising money for Clinica Tepeyac and the health care services it provides for the city’s under- and uninsured Latino residents. Founder and chief executive officer Jim Garcia noted that demand for Clinica Tepeyac’s services has “grown tremendously in recent years” and that given the climate in Washington regarding health care and immigration, “It’s all the more important for Clinica to be seen as that safe haven where you’re treated with respect and dignity. “We consider our patients family,” Garcia said, adding that approximately 5,000 people received medical care there in 2016; 83 percent of them live below the poverty line.
