A Los Angeles police officer shot and wounded a man who was wielding a machete and allegedly was robbing another man near downtown early Saturday.

A cache of Los Angeles Police Department submachine guns and handguns was stolen last week from a secured building used by the department's SWAT unit, raising fears that the weapons, which police had altered to fire only blanks, could be converted back to lethal use, police officials confirmed.

Seal Beach police said the death toll from the salon shooting has risen to eight people. A ninth victim is in critical condition at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. "This could be one of our greatest tragedies," Police Sgt. Steve Bowles said.
