Apple has reportedly given the okay to its retail stores to price-match iPhones sold by other, authorized sellers. Citing an unnamed source, MacRumors reported Thursday that Apple stores will price-match the iPhone 4 to as low as $49.99 and the iPhone 4S to as low as $149.99, posting a document that says customers can ask for savings of nearly $50.

Apple is said to be ready to introduce a new iPhone with an event on Sept. 12, according to a person with knowledge of Apple's plans.

Despite a year's worth of speculation surrounding a 5th iPhone model, Apple spent today's press event talking about a brand new version of the popular iPhone 4. It doesn't have a bigger screen, or sleek new form factor, but it does give iPhone fans a new reason to be excited.

The invite says "let's talk iPhone," implying the secretive company intends to show off the latest version of the device.

Though the iPhone 3GS was first released in 2009, one analyst has said Apple will continue to sell its third-generation handset after the "iPhone 5" is announced, offering it for free with a service contract or for $399 unsubsidized.

A "fairly different" and quite attractive iPhone 5 should be in stores by mid-October, say sources cited in three reputable publications.
