Taylor Swift Just Trademarked ‘this Sick Beat’

Nothing says Taylor Swift like fun times within tightly defined, strictly patrolled parameters, and the reigning queen of pop music–who rules the realm of modern media with an iron fist decorated with kitty stickers–has a cool new way for you to use some of her catchiest catch phrases: only with her explicit permission, under threat of legal action. A recent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows that Swift has applied to trademark several phrases from lyrics to her album 1989, including “Party like it’s 1989,” “‘Cause we never go out of style,” and the notorious “This sick beat” line from her rapped bridge on “Shake It Off.” This means that if you were planning on selling “This Sick Beat” shirts on Etsy, you should probably scrap them or face Swift’s super perky, toootally chill legal wrath. You might want to stay away from riffing on Beyoncé too. This article originally appeared on EW.com.
